The Colombo District Court today rejected a request seeking an order directing Sri Lankan cricketer Chamika Karunaratne to provide a blood sample for DNA testing in connection with an ongoing paternity dispute.
The application was filed during proceedings related to a case instituted by airline pilot Rasika Sewwandi, who is seeking a court order directing the Registrar General to issue a birth certificate naming Karunaratne as the father of her child.
Delivering the order, Colombo District Court Judge Lalith Kannangara said the plaintiff had failed to establish sufficient grounds to compel the cricketer to provide a blood sample for DNA analysis. Accordingly, the request was dismissed.
However, the court directed that the case be called again on October 9 for further proceedings.
President’s Counsel Jagath Wickramanayake, with Niranjala Gunathilaka, instructed by Ramzi Bacha Associates, appeared for Chamika Karunaratne, while President’s Counsel Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe appeared for Rasika Sewwandi.
