Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala said the government is considering granting a one-year service extension to police officers who have reached the age of 60 and maintained a record of good conduct.
The Minister made the remarks in Parliament while responding to a question raised by the Opposition regarding vacancies within the Sri Lanka Police Department.
He said 10,000 members of the Civil Security Department have been attached to the police service, of whom 6,000 have already assumed duties.
Minister Wijepala acknowledged that the Police Department is facing a shortage of human resources and said steps are being taken to manage the situation while reducing the workload faced by officers, particularly those in the lower ranks.
He added that necessary measures are being implemented to address staffing challenges and ensure the effective functioning of the police service.
