The Government is set to introduce Sri Lanka's first dedicated motorcycle lane in Kaluwanchikudy as part of a broader initiative to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving two-wheelers.
Transport, Highways and Urban Development Minister Bimal Rathnayake announced the project while addressing the launch of the "100 for 100" National Corporate Motorcycle Safety Programme.
The Minister said motorcycle-related accidents continue to account for a significant share of road crashes in the country, making targeted safety measures a national priority.
According to Rathnayake, the dedicated motorcycle lane has already been designed and will be physically separated from other traffic using rubber dividers. The pilot project is expected to be implemented in the coming months.
He noted that the initiative draws inspiration from countries such as Malaysia, where dedicated motorcycle lanes have contributed to a significant reduction in road accidents.
Kaluwanchikudy was selected as the location for the pilot project due to its high concentration of motorcycle users. If the initiative proves successful, the Government plans to replicate the model in other parts of Sri Lanka.
The proposed motorcycle lane forms part of the Government's wider efforts to enhance road safety, improve traffic management, and protect vulnerable road users across the country.
