The Department of Irrigation has issued a flood warning for several areas in the Kelani River Basin after significant rainfall was recorded in the upper and middle catchment areas.
According to the department, the warning is based on the prevailing weather conditions and an analysis of river water levels measured at hydrological monitoring stations across the Kelani River Basin. A minor flood situation may develop in several low-lying areas within the next 24 hours.
The Divisional Secretariat areas of Dompe, Seethawaka, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, and Kolonnawa are expected to be affected, particularly the low-lying areas along the Kelani River floodplain.
The Department of Irrigation also warned that forecasts indicate the possibility of further heavy rainfall, which could cause river water levels to rise rapidly. Residents in vulnerable areas, river users, and motorists travelling through flood-prone locations have been urged to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution.
Meanwhile, the department has also warned of a flood risk over the next 24 hours in the low-lying areas of the Dehiowita, Ruwanwella, and Yatiyantota Divisional Secretariat divisions.
Authorities have advised residents living in low-lying areas, road users, and communities located near the river to stay alert and follow official updates and safety instructions as the situation develops.u
