The Wimalasurendra Reservoir has started spilling water from the early hours of August 3 after heavy rainfall in the Norton Bridge catchment area, according to the reservoir's resident engineers.

Officials said the continuous downpours significantly increased inflows to the reservoir, prompting the release of excess water to ensure safe reservoir operations.

The Nuwara Eliya District Disaster Management Unit stated that the spill has caused a slight rise in the water level of the Kelani River. Residents living along the riverbanks are advised to remain vigilant and follow any safety instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
