The University of Peradeniya administration has ordered the immediate evacuation of students residing on the ground floor of the Sarasavi Medura hostel due to the rising risk of flooding.

The decision was taken following heavy rainfall and concerns over increasing water levels in the Mahaweli River basin.

The university has also issued a special notice urging all other students staying in hostels and across the university premises to remain vigilant and closely monitor the developing situation.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) warned today (August 3) that continued rainfall could result in flooding in several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River basin. Authorities have advised residents and students in vulnerable areas to remain alert and follow official safety instructions.
