Three spill gates of the Upper Kotmale Reservoir were automatically opened in the early hours of today (August 3) due to continued heavy rainfall in the reservoir's catchment areas, according to the reservoir's engineers.
Officials stated that if heavy rains continue over the Upper Kotmale catchment, the remaining spill gates may also open automatically. The Disaster Management Unit has therefore urged residents living along both banks of the Kotmale Oya downstream of the reservoir to remain alert and exercise caution.
Meanwhile, persistent heavy rainfall has significantly increased the water flow at the St. Clair's Falls and Devon Falls, with authorities advising the public to remain vigilant when visiting areas near the waterfalls.
