Director of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Consultant Dr. Pradeep Rathnayake, said around 50 children with dengue are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. He noted that nearly one-quarter of them are in critical condition.
Dr. Rathnayake warned that if the number of severe dengue cases continues to rise, the hospital could face capacity constraints.
He stressed that parents should seek medical advice as soon as a child develops a fever rather than attempting to treat the illness at home. Delaying professional medical care through self-medication or home remedies can reduce the chances of timely treatment and increase the risk of serious complications.
The hospital director also urged parents to avoid self-treatment and to follow proper medical advice to ensure children receive the care they need as early as possible.
