According to the department, the heat index which represents the temperature felt by the human body is expected to reach the "Caution" level during the daytime in parts of the Eastern Province and the districts of Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Polonnaruwa, Hambantota, and Monaragala.
Authorities have urged the public to take necessary precautions to minimise the health risks associated with the hot weather. People are advised to drink plenty of water, rest in shaded or cool areas whenever possible, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Special attention should be given to elderly individuals and those with existing health conditions, as they are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Parents and caregivers are also strongly reminded not to leave children unattended inside parked vehicles.
The Department of Meteorology further recommends limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and wearing light-coloured, lightweight clothing to reduce the effects of the heat.
