Two Sri Lankan nationals suspected of involvement in a shooting incident in Wattala have been detained by Indian Marine Police after allegedly entering India illegally by boat.
The two men, identified as 31-year-old G. Vigneswaran and 30-year-old M. Lusinath, both residents of Wattala, were detained after Marine Police personnel on patrol as part of the Sagar Kavach coastal defence exercise spotted them behaving suspiciously along the Dhanushkodi shoreline on Friday.
The duo was taken to the Marine Police Station for questioning, where their identities were established.
During further inquiries, Indian authorities were informed that Sri Lankan authorities suspected the two men of involvement in a shooting incident reported in Wattala on Thursday.
Police sources also said that both men have three pending drug-related cases in Sri Lanka.
Following a request from Sri Lankan authorities for their custody, the suspects were reportedly transferred to a special camp located within the premises of the Tiruchi Central Prison.
They are expected to be repatriated to Sri Lanka within a week, according to police sources.
