The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) said that it may record a statement from the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara, upon the conclusion of its ongoing investigation into the recent clash at the Negombo Prison.
According to HRCSL Commissioner Attorney-at-Law Nimal Punchihewa, the commission has already initiated the process of questioning both prison officials and inmates connected to the incident. However, he noted that the inquiry is currently facing logistical challenges, as a large number of the prisoners involved have since been transferred to remote prison facilities across the island.
The comprehensive probe is closely examining potential human rights violations that may have occurred during the unrest. The commission highlighted that affected inmates have the legal grounds to file fundamental rights petitions regarding the actions taken during the clash, as the prison guards involved were operating in their official capacity as representatives of the state.
