Sri Lanka has reached a major milestone in its irrigation development with the completion of excavation work on South Asia’s longest irrigation tunnel.
The 27.7-kilometre tunnel, constructed under the North Central Province Canal Project as part of the long-awaited Mahaweli Master Plan, is set to be officially opened for public use today (15).
The project marks a significant achievement in the country’s irrigation sector and is expected to strengthen water distribution to agricultural areas while supporting long-term water resource management under the Mahaweli development program.
