The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for Sri Lanka to host the Fourth BIMSTEC Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting and Senior Officials’ Meeting on March 17 and 18, 2027.

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, and serves as a regional platform to strengthen economic and technical cooperation among member states.

The government said agriculture remains one of BIMSTEC’s priority areas due to its significant contribution to regional economies, sustainable development and food security.

The Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting and the Senior Officials’ Meeting are convened once every two years to promote collaboration and policy coordination among member countries in the agriculture sector.

The proposal to host the 2027 meetings in Sri Lanka was presented by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation and received Cabinet approval.
