The government is currently considering requests from several professional sectors seeking a revision of the retirement age, Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Speaking to the media after attending the opening of the newly established kidney stone treatment unit at Mirigama Hospital yesterday (12), the Minister said the government has received a number of appeals from professional groups requesting an extension of the retirement age.

He noted that the requests have come from a range of sectors, including members of the judiciary serving in the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and High Court, as well as certain categories of health professionals.

According to the Minister, similar requests have also been submitted by officers of the Department of Prisons and other professional groups who believe they are capable of continuing in service beyond the current retirement age.

Dr. Jayatissa said the government is carefully examining all representations received and will make a decision after considering the views and requirements of the relevant sectors.
