The Department of Prisons has decided to facilitate court appearances of inmates transferred from the Negombo Prison to other correctional facilities through video conferencing.

Prisons Spokesperson Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake said the new arrangement will come into effect from tomorrow (13), with eligible inmates appearing before courts via video link instead of being physically transported.

The decision follows the transfer of a group of inmates to other prisons after the recent unrest at the Negombo Prison. The Department said transporting those inmates to courts had posed logistical and security challenges.

Commissioner Gajanayake said the use of video technology is intended to ensure uninterrupted court proceedings while addressing those challenges.

Meanwhile, the Department of Prisons has appointed a three-member committee to assess the damage caused by the recent incident at the Negombo Prison.
