The government has decided to establish a new prison complex in the Mahamodara area of Galle, following the issuance of an Extraordinary Gazette notification by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Harshana Nanayakkara.
The gazette, issued under the powers vested in the Minister by Section 2 of the Prisons Ordinance, formally authorizes the establishment of the new correctional facility.
According to the notification, the prison will be officially named "Mahamodara" and will have jurisdiction covering the entirety of Sri Lanka.
Officials from the Ministry of Justice said the facility will initially operate on a temporary basis from a section of the former Mahamodara Hospital, which is no longer in use.
