Three people who were injured during a renewed outbreak of unrest at Negombo Prison have died, according to hospital authorities. The Director of the Negombo Hospital confirmed that two of the deceased were security officers.
Police said the incident occurred following clashes between prison officers and a group of inmates inside the prison premises. Several prison officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Around 35 injured individuals were admitted to Negombo Hospital for treatment, with the majority reported to be members of the security forces.
Authorities deployed additional police personnel from nearby stations, including Mirigama and Veyangoda, to help bring the situation under control.
The Police Special Task Force (STF) has also been deployed to reinforce security at the prison. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
