A tense situation erupted once again at the Negombo Prison on Sunday (06), with fresh unrest breaking out inside the facility, according to reports.

Several prison officers were reportedly injured during the renewed disturbances, while authorities moved swiftly to contain the situation.

Video footage from the scene showed personnel from the Police and the Special Task Force (STF) deployed inside the prison premises as they worked to restore order.

The latest unrest follows a violent clash that broke out inside the prison on Saturday (05) between groups of remand and convicted prisoners.

The earlier confrontation claimed the lives of two inmates and left 38 prisoners injured. Although prison authorities had brought the situation under control by Sunday morning, fresh disturbances were reported later in the day.

Authorities have since intensified security measures within the prison, while efforts are continuing to fully restore normalcy.
