At least two inmates have died following a violent clash between two groups of prisoners inside Negombo Prison earlier today, prison sources confirmed.
According to initial reports, the confrontation broke out within the prison premises under circumstances that have not yet been officially disclosed.
Following the violence, 25 injured inmates were admitted to hospital care. They were transported to Negombo Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. The severity of the injuries sustained by the prisoners has not been fully detailed at this stage.
Security within the facility has reportedly been tightened, while prison officials and law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the clash and identify those responsible.
