More than 1,000 police officers have been removed from service over various disciplinary and criminal offences, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala has revealed.

The Minister said a number of officers were dismissed for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking and maintaining connections with organised criminal groups.

Others were removed from the Police Department over offences such as dereliction of duty, bribery, and other disciplinary violations.

Minister Wijepala also stated that complaints lodged against police personnel are being investigated without delay, adding that prompt action is being taken against officers found to have engaged in misconduct.
