A newly constructed apartment complex for low-income families was officially inaugurated yesterday (4) in Kirulapone, providing modern housing for hundreds of relocated families in Colombo.
The “The Residencies Kirulapone” project, located on D.M. Colombage Mawatha, consists of two residential blocks, including an 11-storey tower with a total of 624 housing units. The development was completed at a cost of Rs. 5.784 billion.
The project was financed by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and implemented by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) under the Colombo Urban Regeneration Programme, which operates under the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development.
The apartments have been allocated to families relocated from Poorwarama, Samagi Mawatha in Narahenpita, Samagi Watta, Pichchamal Watta along Kirimandala Mawatha, as well as residents affected by the Kelani Valley railway modernisation project.
Residents will have access to a range of modern facilities, including fire safety and gas systems, water and sewerage services, passenger lifts, electricity, common parking, a preschool, daycare centre, community hall, supermarket, healthcare centre, Grama Niladhari office, police post and a fire response unit.
Authorities also announced that the next phase of the development will include the construction of five new access roads, improvements to the Kirulapone canal system, a stormwater retention pond to mitigate flooding, a commercial complex with 38 shops, walking tracks and a fitness centre aimed at enhancing the quality of life and economic opportunities for residents.
