The 23-year-old suspect, a resident of Batapola, Ethkandura, is alleged to have driven the car that transported the gunmen involved in the shooting, which took place in front of a supermarket in Akuregoda.
According to police, the suspect was arrested by a special Sri Lankan police team in the Maldives after local immigration authorities identified him upon his arrival from Bahrain. His arrest was made based on an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of Sri Lankan authorities.
Following the arrest, the suspect was escorted from Malé to Sri Lanka on SriLankan Airlines flight UL116, arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake this evening.
After recording his statement at the airport, officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) handed him over to the Western Province South Crimes Division under tight security for further investigations.
Police said investigations into the double murder are continuing.
