Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha chaired a high-level meeting to address garbage disposal and waste management issues in the Colombo Municipal Council area amid growing concerns over a possible Dengue fever outbreak.
Held at the Ministry of Defence, the meeting focused on the need for a coordinated and sustainable approach to resolving waste management challenges in the city. The Defence Secretary stressed the importance of close collaboration among all relevant agencies to ensure a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally sustainable Colombo.
Highlighting the increased risk of dengue during the ongoing rainy season, he instructed the relevant authorities to strengthen waste collection systems, improve resource allocation and take immediate action to remove accumulated garbage from affected areas while ensuring long-term operational efficiency.
Participants also discussed practical measures and long-term strategies to address the city's waste management issues. The meeting was attended by the Mayor of Colombo, the Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, the Director General of the Civil Security Department, as well as senior officers from the Tri-Forces and the Police.
