The government has taken steps to accelerate the proposed “Temple City” development project, aimed at transforming the area surrounding Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake into an internationally recognised cultural and tourism destination.
A discussion on the project was held yesterday (30) at the Presidential Secretariat under the chairmanship of Presidential Secretary Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
The proposed project, to be implemented under the guidance of the Gangaramaya Temple and led by the Urban Development Authority (UDA), seeks to capitalise on the temple’s prominence as one of Colombo’s leading religious and cultural landmarks by enhancing the surrounding area as a major tourist attraction.
Development plans include the construction of a pedestrian walkway around Beira Lake, landscaping and beautification of the area, and the introduction of additional visitor-friendly facilities for both local and international tourists.
During the meeting, officials reviewed the project’s proposed plans and implementation strategy. The Presidential Secretary stressed the importance of strengthening coordination among relevant government institutions and ensuring the support of all stakeholders to expedite the project.
Once completed, the initiative is expected to establish the Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake precinct as a world-class cultural and tourism hub while further enhancing Colombo’s appeal as a leading travel destination.
The meeting was attended by Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero, Chief Incumbent of Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, Prime Minister’s Secretary Pradeep Saputhanthri, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Roshan Gamage, UDA Chairman M.G. Hemachandra, Deputy Mayor of the Colombo Municipal Council Hemantha Kumara, representatives of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, officials from relevant state institutions, and senior members of the security forces.
