The Malabe Police have arrested five suspects following the circulation of a social media video showing a youth being brutally assaulted near a Dansala in Malabe town on Poson Poya Day.

According to the police, the viral footage captured a group of individuals attacking a young man using their hands, feet, and motorcycle helmets. Following a formal complaint lodged at the Malabe Police Station on June 30, 2026, authorities launched an immediate investigation that led to the swift arrest of five individuals connected to the assault.

The arrested suspects have been identified as teenagers aged 16 and 17, all residing in the Kaduwela area.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the altercation broke out in a queue at a rice Dansala organized within the Malabe town limits. The clash was reportedly triggered when a person standing in the queue objected to two individuals attempting to bypass the line and cut in from the outside.

The five teenage suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court today, July 1, 2026.
