World Environment Day was officially established following a resolution adopted at the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 5 to 16, 1972. Since then, June 5 has been observed annually around the world to raise awareness and encourage action for the protection of the environment.
As part of this year’s national celebrations, a special World Environment Day programme is scheduled to be held at Temple Trees at 9:00 a.m. today under the patronage of Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Marking the occasion, the Ministry of Environment has launched a series of practical environmental activities across the country under the theme “Let It Sprout”, guided by the vision “A Sustainable Biosphere A Greener Life.”
According to the Ministry, the programme aims to encourage public participation in environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable living practices, while fostering greater awareness of the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.
World Environment Day serves as a global platform for governments, organizations, communities, and individuals to take collective action in addressing environmental challenges and building a more sustainable future.
