According to data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, remittances from Sri Lankans working abroad reached USD 3.06 billion between January and April 2026. This represents a 24.5% increase compared to USD 2.46 billion received during the same period in 2025.

The positive trend continued in April, with remittance inflows totaling USD 767.9 million, up 18.8% from USD 646.1 million recorded in April 2025.

Analysts attribute the increase largely to the growing number of Sri Lankan workers, especially skilled professionals, securing employment opportunities overseas. The rise in overseas employment has strengthened the flow of foreign currency back to Sri Lanka, helping support household incomes and improving the country's external financial position.

Foreign remittances remain one of Sri Lanka's most important sources of foreign exchange, alongside exports and tourism revenue. The continued growth in remittance inflows is expected to contribute positively to economic stability and reserve accumulation throughout 2026.
