In a letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Association stated that the transfer, which is due to take effect on May 31, comes barely a month after Judge A.G. Alexraja assumed duties at the Jaffna High Court on April 22.
The Association said the timing of the transfer has led to speculation regarding possible external influence. It noted that Judge Alexraja had recently issued interim orders against the Governor of the Northern Province in several writ applications and alleged that efforts may have been made to seek intervention from various authorities, including members of the government.
While recognizing the authority of the Judicial Service Commission to transfer judicial officers, the Bar Association stressed that sudden and unexplained transfers could undermine public trust in the judiciary.
The Association warned that even the perception of interference in judicial affairs could have serious consequences for the independence and credibility of the justice system.
Calling for urgent attention to the matter, the Jaffna Bar Association urged the President to investigate the circumstances surrounding the transfer and ensure that public confidence in the judiciary is maintained.
The Association has also requested an opportunity to meet the President in person to discuss its concerns regarding the transfer and its potential implications for judicial independence.
