Speaking at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Health today (12), Dr. Prasila Samaraweera, Community Medicine Specialist at the National Dengue Control Unit, said that 27,754 dengue cases and 14 related deaths had been reported across the country as of yesterday (11).
She said the highest number of cases has been reported from the Western Province, while cases have also been recorded in the Colombo, Gampaha, Matara, Galle, Ratnapura, Kalutara and Kandy districts.
Dr. Samaraweera noted that dengue patients are being reported from all 25 districts and warned that the number of cases could rise further with the onset of the monsoon season.
She urged the public to destroy mosquito breeding sites and maintain clean surroundings to prevent the spread of dengue.
The doctor also advised the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, headache, vomiting, nausea or red spots on the body, and to inform doctors about their symptoms promptly.
She further stated that mosquito breeding has increased in schools, workplaces, religious institutions and both government and private institutions compared to homes.
According to Dr. Samaraweera, Medical Officer of Health offices have been granted powers to take legal action against institutions and premises that continue to maintain mosquito breeding sites carelessly.
She added that improper garbage disposal remains the main cause of mosquito breeding and stressed that all parties have a responsibility to eliminate such breeding grounds.
