Residents in the area said the latest landslide occurred after an earlier earthslip in the Watawala area, which had taken place during Cyclone Ditwa, was recently cleared. They noted that the new incident was caused by heavy rains experienced in the Watawala area on the 10th.
Following the landslide, vehicular movement along the affected stretch has been restricted to a single lane, causing significant traffic disruptions on the busy route.
The Executive Engineer of the Norwood Road Development Authority stated that immediate measures will be taken to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions continue to prevail in several parts of the island, raising concerns over further landslide risks in vulnerable hill-country regions, including areas along the Hatton–Colombo corridor.
