The decision, which comes into effect from April 8, 2026, follows concerns over maintaining uninterrupted public service delivery across key sectors.

In a directive issued to the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Presidential Chief of Staff and Commissioner General of Essential Services Prabhat Chandra Keerthi said the measure is intended to enhance operational efficiency and reduce service disruptions.

The Wednesday holiday, previously granted under Public Administration Circular No. 09/2026, will no longer be applicable from the effective date, marking a shift in the government’s approach to public sector work schedules.
