According to the Police Media Unit, the IGP has directed all police stations to implement heightened security measures, particularly in areas surrounding places of Christian worship. Authorities emphasized that the measures are precautionary and aimed at ensuring the safety of worshippers.
Police, along with personnel from the Special Task Force (STF), have been deployed to provide security at churches nationwide. Senior officers have also been instructed to identify churches expecting large congregations and ensure adequate protection.
Security has been further intensified in major urban centres, including Colombo, where armed police and military personnel have been stationed at key churches.
The heightened measures come in the wake of the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings, in which 269 people were killed and more than 500 injured in coordinated attacks targeting churches and luxury hotels.
