In a statement, the department said that scammers are sending SMS messages to individuals, claiming that a payment is required to receive a parcel. Recipients are then directed to make the payment through an online link.
According to Postmaster General R.P. Sathkumara, this scam targets unsuspecting users by prompting them to enter their bank card details via a fraudulent payment gateway. Once the information is submitted, the perpetrators gain unauthorized access to victims’ bank accounts and withdraw funds.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant about such deceptive messages, suspicious links, and unauthorized online payment requests. People are strongly advised not to click on unknown links or provide sensitive information such as card details or One-Time Passwords (OTP) to third parties or unfamiliar websites.
The Postal Department emphasized that it does not request payments through unsolicited SMS messages and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activity immediately.
