Spanning 602 hectares in the Palagala Divisional Secretariat Division of the Anuradhapura District, Namal Uyana is considered a site of exceptional environmental, geographical, and religious importance. The declaration followed a request by its founder, Venerable Wanawasi Rahula Thero, with the support of the Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs. A commemorative plaque was unveiled by the President using virtual technology.

Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake stressed that safeguarding this unique environmental heritage and passing it on to future generations is a shared responsibility of all citizens. He also commended Ven. Wanawasi Rahula Thero for his longstanding dedication to protecting and developing the site.

In his address, Ven. Wanawasi Rahula Thero described the declaration as one of the most notable environmental services undertaken by the present government. He expressed appreciation to the media for their continued support in promoting the initiative and raising awareness about the importance of preserving the site.
