The Director of the IMF's Communications Department, Julie Kozack, confirmed the visit, noting that it marks a significant step in the country's ongoing economic recovery. During their stay, the representatives will engage with local authorities to evaluate current economic policies and assess the progress made toward the stabilization goals set out in the recovery framework.
In addition to standard policy evaluations, the discussions will cover external risks, specifically the potential economic impacts on Sri Lanka arising from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Following the visit, Julie Kozack stated that the IMF will provide an updated assessment of Sri Lanka’s economy to determine the best possible support the Fund can offer moving forward.
The timeline for these financial tranches has been slightly adjusted to account for recent challenges. While the staff-level agreement for the fifth review was reached on October 9, 2025, the authorities have now planned to conduct the fifth and sixth reviews simultaneously. This decision was influenced by the economic fallout from Cyclone Ditwa and shifts in global demand.
Upon the successful completion of these reviews and subsequent approval by the IMF Executive Board, Sri Lanka is expected to unlock a financial disbursement of approximately $347 million. This visit is anticipated to fast-track the review process for the sixth installment, ensuring the continued momentum of the nation’s fiscal reforms.
