The government noted that while the Power Economy has been identified as a priority sector for national growth, there has been a noticeable reluctance in attracting investments. This hesitance is largely attributed to existing weaknesses in the integration between major economic sectors.

Recognizing these gaps, the President emphasized the necessity of an integrated economic development framework during the 2026 Budget presentation. The goal is to align national policies, strategic plans, and outcome-delivery frameworks to create a cohesive environment for sustainable development.

To spearhead this transition, the special committee will be chaired by Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya. The committee is tasked with formulating the necessary framework to synchronize various economic arms and streamline the development of the power sector.

The proposal, presented by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies, received full Cabinet approval, marking a significant step toward structural economic reform for the 2026 fiscal year.
