GMOA Media Spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe said only 15 litres of fuel per week is currently permitted for cars, which is not practical for medical officers who need to travel frequently for duty.
He said many doctors are on on-call service and must report to hospitals at any time, making it difficult to manage with the limited fuel quota.
According to him, the weekly allowance allows only about two litres of petrol per day, which is not enough when considering heavy traffic and long travel distances to hospitals.
“The quota may be sufficient only if the hospital is very close to the doctor’s residence, but that is not the situation for most of our members,” he said.
The GMOA has informed Anura Kumara Dissanayake in writing about the issue and requested a sustainable solution to ensure uninterrupted medical services across the country.
