Sacred relics of Lord Buddha to conclude public exposition today and return to India

The public exposition of the Sacred Relics at Gangaramaya Temple, Hunupitiya, Colombo, will conclude today (11) at 6.00 a.m., after which the revered relics are scheduled to be returned to India.

Over the past several days, a massive number of devotees from across the country visited Gangaramaya Temple to pay their respects and worship the Sacred Relics, marking a deeply significant religious event for Sri Lankan Buddhists.

The relics were brought to Sri Lanka on the afternoon of the 4th, arriving at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake aboard a special aircraft provided by the Government of India, under full state patronage.

This historic occasion was made possible following discussions held between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s visit to Sri Lanka. As a result of Prime Minister Modi’s direct intervention and the full support of the Indian Government, arrangements were made to bring the Sacred Relics to Sri Lanka.

The relics had been preserved under high security at the Baroda Museum in India and had never previously been taken outside the country. This visit marked the first time Sri Lankan devotees were granted the rare opportunity to witness and venerate the Sacred Sarvajna Relics in person.

The exposition is regarded as a landmark religious and cultural event, strengthening spiritual ties and long-standing relations between Sri Lanka and India.
