Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya says that a significantly higher quantity of drugs and weapons was recovered in 2025 compared to 2024, marking a record achievement in the history of the Sri Lanka Police.
Speaking at a function held in Hatton, the IGP stated that the overall performance of the police service improved by 50 to 60 percent in 2025. He noted that, compared to the previous year, weapons seizures doubled while drug seizures tripled.
The IGP emphasized that this progress was achieved despite a reduction in the number of police officers. He attributed the improved performance to constant supervision, the dedication of officers, and proper evaluation of their duties.
He further said that the enforcement of traffic offences and other criminal investigations increased by about 60 percent in 2025. The IGP also highlighted that the direct intervention of the Minister helped resolve long-standing issues faced by officers, enabling the granting of more than 4,500 promotions.
