Fairly strong winds ranging from 30–40 kmph are expected at times over the Northern and North-Western provinces and in the Matale, Trincomalee and Anuradhapura districts.
Showers, Strong Winds and Rough Seas Expected Across Sri Lanka
The Department of Meteorology forecasts intermittent showers across several parts of the island, with fairly heavy rainfall expected in some areas over the next 24 hours.
Showers will occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District. Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations in the Uva Province and in the Batticaloa, Ampara, Hambantota and Nuwara-Eliya districts.
In other parts of the country, showers or thundershowers may develop after 2.00 p.m., with fairly heavy showers of over 50 mm possible in some areas.
Misty conditions are likely during the early morning hours in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara and Badulla districts.
The general public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
Sea Areas Around the Island
Showers are expected at several places in the sea areas off the coasts from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Elsewhere around the island, showers or thundershowers may occur during the evening or night.
Winds will be north-easterly with speeds of 30–40 kmph, increasing up to 45–50 kmph at times in sea areas from Colombo to Mullaittivu via Puttalam and Kankasanthurai, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
The sea will be fairly rough in these areas, while other sea regions around the island are expected to remain moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may occur during thundershowers.
