A leopard cub accompanying its mother was sighted inside a tea estate in the Bogawantalawa area yesterday (3), underscoring increasing encounters between wildlife and human-inhabited plantation regions.
The incident, recorded on a mobile phone by a tea estate worker, occurred when the leopard and its cub entered the estate area, reportedly in search of dogs roaming the surroundings. Plantation workers said the situation escalated when several dogs gathered and chased the animals.
To avoid the dogs, the leopard cub climbed a nearby tree, while the mother leopard stayed close by, monitoring the situation. After the dogs moved away, the cub descended safely and was seen leaving the area together with its mother.
Estate workers said no injuries were reported. The incident has renewed concerns among residents about wildlife movement into plantation areas and the need for greater awareness and safety measures to prevent conflict between humans, domestic animals and wildlife.
