The National Council for Road Safety (NCRS) has announced plans to update and implement new speed limits across Sri Lankan roads by March 31.
NCRS Chairman Manjula Kularatne stated that the revision process is in its final stages, with changes being made to prioritize both road safety and traffic convenience.
According to Kularatne, roads with high accident rates and congested areas will see lower speed limits, while routes with modern infrastructure and smooth traffic flow may have speed limits relaxed.
The Council is also finalizing the necessary legal frameworks and road markings to support the updated limits.
“The primary objective of these amendments is to reduce road accidents and manage traffic congestion effectively,” the Chairman added.
