The Constitutional Council (CC) is scheduled to meet on Tuesday (3) to take a final decision on the appointment of a new Auditor General, following further consideration of a nominee submitted by the President.
The Council met yesterday (31 January) with its newly appointed civil society members and agreed to reconvene on Tuesday to study the nomination in more detail before reaching a determination.
Speaking to the media in Kandy yesterday, Minister Bimal Rathnayake said the CC is currently reviewing the nomination forwarded by the President.
“The Constitutional Council has met and discussed the appointment of the Auditor General. The President has submitted a name, and members require some time to study it. Therefore, a decision will be taken on Tuesday, the day Parliament convenes,” the Minister said.
He added that although a decision had been expected earlier, further scrutiny of the nomination made an additional meeting necessary.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has nominated Senior Deputy Auditor General L.S.I. Jayarathne for the post, which has remained vacant for nearly ten months. Jayarathne’s nomination had previously been rejected by the Constitutional Council.
