Chief Government Whip Bimal Rathnayake said the President’s nomination for the post of Auditor General is expected to be considered when the Constitutional Council meets today (31) for its second session with the newly appointed civil society representatives.

The Constitutional Council, chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, held its first meeting on Friday (30), with Prof. Wasantha Seneviratne, Austin Fernando and Ranjith Ariyaratne attending after being jointly confirmed by the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition. Several other members participated in the meeting via Zoom.

Although there had been expectations that a final decision would be reached on the long-vacant post of Auditor General at Friday’s meeting, the Council decided to defer the matter to a future session, according to the Office of the Speaker.

Rathnayake, who represents the President on the Constitutional Council, said the nomination is expected to be reconsidered when the Council convenes today.
