The agreement to implement the salary increase for estate workers will be signed today (30) with regional plantation companies, the Ministry of Plantations and Community Infrastructure announced.
The salary revision follows a proposal made by the President in the 2025 Budget to increase the daily wage of an estate worker to Rs. 1,750.
Under the approved framework, the basic daily wage will be increased by Rs. 200, from Rs. 1,350 to Rs. 1,550. In addition, the government will provide a further Rs. 200 as an attendance allowance, bringing the total daily earning to Rs. 1,750.
The Cabinet has granted approval to implement the revised salary structure with effect from this month. A sum of Rs. 5,000 million has been allocated in the 2025 Budget to meet the cost of the wage increase.
The Ministry said the move is aimed at improving the livelihoods of estate workers and ensuring greater social and economic stability in plantation communities.
