Veteran Sri Lankan film director Sena Samarasinghe has passed away at the age of 89, marking the end of an era in Sinhala cinema.
Born on November 25, 1937, in Randeniya, Kegalle, as Nandasena Samarasinghe, he later became widely known as Sena Samarasinghe after earning recognition in the local film industry. He was also a relative of popular film actor Bandu Samarasinghe.
Samarasinghe received his education in Bandarawela and Gurutalawa, and later at St. Thomas’ College, where he excelled both academically and in sports, earning a reputation as a disciplined student and natural leader.
Following his formal education, he developed a deep interest in cinema, inspired and encouraged by his close friendship with legendary actor Gamini Fonseka. This passion led him to dedicate his life to the advancement of Sinhala cinema, contributing to what is often described as its golden era.
His filmmaking journey began in 1973 with the production of Sadahatama Oba Mage, co-produced with Milton Jayawardena. The film is notable for introducing Bandu Samarasinghe as a character actor and featured leading stars of the time, including Gamini Fonseka, Malini Fonseka and Joe Abeywickrama.
Sena Samarasinghe’s contribution to Sri Lankan cinema is remembered for its artistic value and lasting impact, and his passing is widely mourned by the film fraternity and audiences alike.
