Two employees of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) have been arrested for illegally removing fuel from municipal vehicles and selling it, police said
The suspects were taken into custody with 16 litres of fuel and produced before court. Authorities said steps will also be taken to suspend them from duty.
Investigations have revealed that the racket had been operating on a daily basis for a long period, with suspicions that several other CMC employees may also be involved. Further investigations are underway.
Colombo Mayor Vrai Kele Balthazar said fraudulent activities and corruption have been taking place within the CMC for some time, adding that strict legal action will be taken against all officials and employees found to be involved.
