The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection has approved two key legislative proposals: the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Bill and the Judicature (Amendment) Bill.
The decisions were made during a Committee meeting in Parliament, chaired by Hon. MP (Dr.) Najith Indika. Earlier, at a meeting held on January 9, 2026, the Bills were extensively discussed, and officials recommended further amendments be referred to the Attorney General’s Department for consultation before submission for Cabinet approval.
Following a review at the recent Committee meeting on January 22, the Bills were granted final approval. The amendments aim to strengthen existing laws on controlling dangerous drug trafficking and production, including activities in international waters, while also introducing new legal provisions.
Committee members present at the meeting included Tushari Jayasinghe (Attorney-at-Law), Chandana Sooriyaarachchi, M.K.M. Aslam, and Major General (Rtd.) G.D. Sooriyabandara.
