A lorry driver who fled after knocking down two traffic police officers on a motorcycle on the Jaffna–Kandy main road in the Kalukunnammaduwa area of Vavuniya was arrested this morning (24), police said.
According to police, the incident occurred while the officers were attempting to stop a small lorry that was being driven without proper clearance. During the pursuit, the suspect’s lorry struck the police motorcycle, throwing both officers onto the road.
Footage recorded on a mobile phone by a passenger in a vehicle travelling behind showed the motorcycle becoming entangled in the lorry and being dragged along the road. Police said the driver later abandoned the lorry and fled into a nearby forested area after realizing the motorcycle was stuck in the vehicle.
The suspect was apprehended by Sri Lanka Army personnel while attempting to flee towards the Army camp near the Boo Oya Bridge. He was subsequently handed over to the police.
The two injured traffic police officers have been admitted to Vavuniya Hospital, and their condition is reported to be serious.
Police said the suspect and the seized lorry are due to be produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate’s Court.
