Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara announced that several stalled urban development projects, along with new initiatives, will be recommenced this year as part of the government’s broader development agenda.
Speaking at the resumption of construction of the low-income housing project on Colombage Mawatha, Nawala, the Deputy Minister criticised previous administrations for mismanaging development projects.
He alleged that earlier governments pursued projects primarily for name recognition, financial commissions and political advantage, rather than for the benefit of the public. “These practices led to a broken and stagnant country,” he said.
“Our vision is to build a city that belongs to everyone, including business communities, through projects that meet proper standards and are completed within the stipulated timeframe,” Deputy Minister Gunasekara stated.
He added that, in line with the government’s mandate, future urban development projects will focus on sustainability and long-term benefits for the people.
A large gathering attended the event, including Chairman of the Urban Development Authority M. G. Hemachandra, Managing Director of Access Engineering Rohan Fernando, Dr. Najith Indika, Attorney-at-Law Lakmali Hemachandra, government officials and local residents.
